FIRST-CLASS GUIDE

What to Bring to Your First Martial Arts Class

Prepare for a free trial without buying the wrong equipment first.

Book a free trial class

Start with the essentials

Wear comfortable training clothes that let you move and bring water. Check the address and appointment time in your confirmation before traveling. Contact the academy if you are unsure which program you booked. Equipment requirements depend on the discipline and the activities included in your introductory session.

Ask before buying gloves or protective equipment

For boxing, Dutch kickboxing or Muay Thai, ask whether you need to bring gloves and hand wraps, whether loan equipment is available and whether other protection is required. A trial is a useful time to learn what the academy recommends. Do not assume equipment is included simply because the class itself is free.

Prepare for grappling or MMA

Ask your chosen academy which clothing and equipment are appropriate for Submission Grappling or MMA. Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling are taught within Submission Grappling. Explain your experience and confirm the appropriate starting session; requirements can differ.

Parents: confirm the details for your child

A parent or guardian should arrange the trial. The children’s age group is 4–8 and the kids’ age group is 9–12 at all three academies. Confirm suitable placement, equipment and parent observation with your local team.

Use a short pre-visit checklist

Confirm the academy, program, appointment date, time and participant name. Save the academy’s phone number. Ask what equipment is provided, what you must bring and when to arrive. If something in the email differs from what you expected, call the local team to resolve it before your visit. After the trial, discuss any equipment purchases alongside your training plans.

Choose your academy.
