An effective punch links the feet, hips, trunk and hands. Practicing that sequence develops boxing-specific timing, balance and control instead of relying only on arm strength.
Reading cues and remembering combinations keep you engaged in the task. Small technical improvements give you something to work toward each session, whether your goal is fitness or competition.
A study of 18 trained volunteers measured oxygen use and heart rate during fitness-boxing drills and found cardiovascular demands comparable with other exercise activities. This supports boxing as a conditioning option; it does not establish identical results for every beginner. Regular physical activity also supports sleep and cardiovascular health. Fitness benefits do not require competition, and contact sparring adds risks that pad and bag drills do not share.
