FOREST HILLS TRAINING GUIDE

Starting martial arts in Forest Hills: a guide for women and moms

If you want to try martial arts or return to training, begin with what you want to learn and the practical arrangements you need. Talk with Striking 101 Forest Hills about a regular program that fits your experience and interests. You do not need to measure your reasons for starting against someone else’s goals.

Choose the skills you want to learn

You might be interested in striking, grappling, a new activity or a routine that includes coached skill practice. Explore boxing, Dutch kickboxing, Muay Thai, submission grappling or MMA, then ask which session is appropriate for you.

Striking 101 does not teach karate or taekwondo. This guide helps women explore our regular classes; it does not advertise a dedicated women-only course. If a group arrangement matters to you, explain your preference and confirm what is available before booking.

Our program-selection guide explains the different training focuses and questions to ask.

Ask about the group and contact arrangements

Ask how newcomers are introduced, how partners are selected, and what contact is involved in your planned session. Find out how to pause an exercise, ask for a different approach or raise a concern. Do not assume an introductory class requires sparring or is contact-free.

You can ask about observation options, instruction and participation needs without sharing a personal experience. Discuss what would help you participate comfortably and confirm what the academy can accommodate. This guide does not establish a particular contact or observation policy.

Discuss self-defense without a guarantee

Self-defense skills are taught within regular martial arts classes at Striking 101. If personal safety is one of your goals, ask how those skills are covered in the program you would join. Our self-defense guide offers more questions about scope and expectations.

Training does not guarantee protection in an uncontrolled confrontation or the ability to protect someone else. Harm is the responsibility of the person causing it, regardless of whether someone has trained. This guide does not offer weapon techniques or advise testing contact skills outside supervised practice.

Make room for your own routine

Ask for the actual member timetable and consider travel, work, school and family commitments. Introductory booking appointments are not the complete schedule. Discuss a manageable starting routine rather than adopting a fixed attendance target from an article.

For parents, confirm your own class and your child’s arrangements separately. Do not assume simultaneous sessions, childcare, school pickup or supervision while you train. Ask about the practical options before making plans.

Our routine guide and Forest Hills parent guide provide more preparation questions.

Prepare and follow your own learning

Before buying equipment, confirm clothing, footwear, gloves or other protection for the planned session. Ask whether anything is supplied and whether additional costs apply. Bring water and check the address, appointment time and when to arrive. Our equipment guide provides a checklist of questions.

After class, note one coaching point and one question. Your goal might be understanding a movement, learning a sequence or becoming comfortable asking for feedback. Review the experience with your instructor.

There is no fixed timetable for confidence, proficiency or physical changes. Training does not guarantee weight loss, stress relief or a mental health outcome. You can judge the class by what you learned, how the instruction felt and whether the arrangements fit your life.
